I was a die hard hardware user until Reason came out. But, there are many programs out there (including Pro-Tools, Logic, Fruity Loops, etc.) that you can make slaps on. Whatever you feel comfortable using is good enough because they all basically do the same thing. The most IMPORTANT thing is that you learn what ever you use inside and out.
I used Fruity Loops XXL to make the two beats on my page. For me it was really difficult when I first started using it. But after I tinkered with it after a while I got the hang of it.

I love it :D

i agree completely

i use ableton live to multitrack.. dont touch its effects or instruments much though.. i do my drums with GURU. for synths i like to program sounds from scratch... Zebra2 was a great synth to learn the basics of sound design, quite versatile. Kontakt is a great sampler, theres a ton of multisampled banks available out there for its format. although i dont play myself, i keep a guitar around and it gets regular use. 2 hand drums & some egg shakers in the mix can keep it sounding organic. always experimenting
